The J.H. Elliott History Forum is a charity which has the objects to preserve, promote and disseminate the intellectual legacy of Sir John Elliott, Regius Professor of Modern History at the University of Oxford between 1991 and 1997, by means of supporting individuals and institutions engaged in the fields of his research, and encouraging future generations to share an interest in history and an awareness of its role in shaping global events. This is an initiative of the Elliott family and a group of disciples and collaborators of Sir John Elliott, namely: Harald E. Braun, Xavier Gil Pujol, Richard L. Kagan, Giuseppe Marcocci, Geoffrey Parker, and Molly Warsh.

Registration for the symposium is compulsory and tickets must be booked via this link buytickets.at/jhelliotthistoryforum/.

Day one and day two need to be booked as separate tickets.

There are limited spaces available for dinner on the Friday evening at the Clore Library, additional booking is required.

Day one of the symposium has no fee, yet booking is required.

There is a fee for day two of the symposium. It is free for current graduate and undergraduate students at the University of Oxford, £15 for Early Career Researcher at the University of Oxford, and £35 for general registration. The price of these tickets includes a generous sandwich lunch as well as tea and coffee refreshments.

Additional booking is required for dinner on day two, which costs £35.

Registration for the conference will close on 30 April 2025 at midday.

The symposium is open to the public, students, and postholders.

Day One (Turl St, Exeter College)

By Train – Arrive at Oxford Railway Station:

Trains to Oxford run frequently from London Paddington, London Marylebone, and other major cities.

The distance from the station to Turl Street, Exeter College: It’s about a 15-20-minute walk. Exit the station and head east on Park End Street. Turn left onto Hythe Bridge Street, then right onto George Street. Continue onto Cornmarket Street, then turn left onto Turl Street. Exeter College will be on your left. Taxis are available outside the station. The journey takes about 5–10 minutes.

By Car

Use the A34 or M40 to reach Oxford. Follow signs for the city centre.

Park and Ride: Use one of Oxford’s Park & Ride services (e.g., Pear Tree, Redbridge, or Thornhill). Take the bus into the city centre and walk to Turl Street.

City Centre Parking: There are several car parks in Oxford, such as the Westgate Shopping Centre Car Park or the Gloucester Green Car Park. From there, it’s a 5–10-minute walk to Exeter College.

Day Two (Cohen Quad)

By Train

Cohen Quad is a 5-minute walk from Oxford Station, via Hythe Bridge Street and Worcester Street.

By Coach

The main coach station is in Gloucester Green off George Street. Cohen Quad is a short walk from the coach station.

By Car

If you are driving to Oxford it is advisable to use the Park and Ride service. There are five large Park and Ride areas on the city approaches, some with free car parking and frequent bus services into the city centre. A list of city centre car parks is given above.
